BADMINTON

Introduction and Origin of the Game: Badminton is a racket sport that is played by two or four players. A singles game involves one person playing against another, and a doubles game is when two players play against another two players. The roots of the sport can be traced to ancient Greece, China, and India, and it is closely related to the old children's game battledore and shuttlecock. Badminton is derived directly from poona, which was played by British army officers stationed in India in the 1860s.

History:  A badminton-like game was known in ancient Greece and Egypt - a game called battledore and shuttlecock - in which two players hit a feathered shuttlecock back and forth with tiny rackets.

The game was played in India during the 18th Century, at which time it was called "Poona" . In the 1860s it was adopted by British Army officers stationed in India. The officers took the game back to England, where it became a success at a party given by the Duke of Beaufort in 1873 at his estate called "Badminton" in Gloucestershire.

A variation of Badminton which has been developed only recently, Speed Badminton or Speedminton, is played without a net, and is gaining popularity, especially in Germany.

Rules and Regulations:

  • A match consists of the best of three games to 21 points
  • Every time there is a serve, one point is scored
  • If the score is 20-20, the individual or team must win by two points to win the game
  • In terms of serving, at the beginning of the game when the score is 0-0 or if the server’s score is even, they will serve from the right service court. However, when the server’s score is odd, they will serve from the left service court.
  • The rally is over once the birdie contacts the floor, does not return over the net, or lands outside the court lines.
It is important to highlight, there are also different rules or regulations depending on if you are playing singles or doubles. Look at the image below to understand the difference

Modified Rules and Regulations:

The first rule says a shuttlecock shall be held less than 1.15 meters (3.8 feet) from a court's surface before serving

The BWF has called for a best-of-five format instead of the existing three-game structure, and that games be reduced to 11 points instead of the current 21 points.

The third is aimed at reducing on-court coaching and also awaits endorsement at the ACM. As per the current rules, on-court coaching is permitted at the 11-point lemon break and at the end of each game during a match; the BWF Council has proposed that this be reduced.

Another rule which came into effect from the start of 2018 makes it mandatory for the game’s top 15 male and female shuttles to participate in at least 12 events per season, or pay a fine.

Field, Court and Equipments:

The Badminton court is divided into two halfs with a net of 1.55 mts high. The width of the court will be 6.1 mtr in doubles and in singles width will be 5.18 mtr. Length of the full court will be 13.4 mtr. Short service line from the net is 1.98 mtr and Long service line from back will be 0.76 mtr. The net height will be 1.55 mtr.

Rackets: It consists of an Oval head and handle attached to it.  The length must be no more than 680 millimeters and width must be no more than 230 mm. The head must be no more than 280 mm in length and 220 mm in width.

The shuttlecock: (also called a shuttle or a birdie) has a round base, usually made of cork, covered in a thin layer of leather or other material. Stuck into the base are sixteen feathers in a traditional shuttle

Skills:

Holding the Racket:Holding the racket correctly is similar to a firm handshake. The racket should not be held too tightly because that will eliminate all flexibility from the wrist, but it should not be held too loosely either.

Racket Grips: For the forehand grip, the index finger controls the racket during the stroke. Meanwhile, the thumb controls the racket when using the backhand grip.

Serving: the high badminton serve is used to move the opponent back by hitting the shuttle in the court's rear end. Meanwhile, the low badminton serve can be used to move the opponent forward and force them to get under the shuttle and make a defensive play. A flick serve is used to trick the opponent into thinking a low serve is about to happen

Strokes: The overhand forehand stroke is the most common, followed by the overhead backhand stroke. The underhand forearm stroke and underarm backhand stroke are used to defend against drop shots from the opponent

Hand-Eye Coordination: being able to perform these strokes and connect the racket with the shuttle depends on hand-eye coordination. Badminton players improve their hand-eye coordination over time

Timing and Rhythm: Acquiring a natural rhythm over time is key to developing good footwork and playing with consistency. Having good timing enables players to position themselves to hit the shuttle at the right moment.

Perception: Players with good perception are able to observe where their opponent is in relation to the rest of the court and adjust their playing style accordingly

Anticipation: this skill enables players to read their opponents' next move and change their stance in preparation for the next shot

Footwork:  A badminton player's success depends on their speed, and speed comes down to footwork. Knowing how to efficiently move around the court allows player to return every shot from their opponents.

Stances: The attacking stance is used against smash and lift shots, the defensive stance is used to execute high clear shots and high serves, the net stance allows players to connect with the shuttle at its highest point when standing at the net.
